Good Things and the Week Ahead – Nov 28 – Dec 2, 2022

Posted: November 27, 2022

Families of Shortreed,

We hope you have enjoyed the Student Inclusive Conferences and the chance to meet with your child’s teacher to get a snapshot of their learning and discuss some goals for term 2.

We are excited to host families in our gym on Friday for our 2022 Santa Breakfast! Staff will be coming in early to prepare and cook pancakes and sausages for Shortreed families (including siblings). Our breakfast will start at 7:00 and families are welcome to come until the first bell (8:45). If you need to come early for breakfast and then head to work, we will have our library open for some holiday movies from 7:30-8:30. Santa will be there from 7:00-9:00. It does tend to get busy for Santa near 8:00 so if your child(ren) want the chance to sit with him, please come early. We will be accepting cash donations and non-perishable food items which will all go to Sources Food Bank. Please watch for an email to use your school cash online account to donate. We also encourage our families to dress in their festive outfits for the breakfast… so Ugly Christmas Sweaters are encouraged!

Thank you to parents and caregivers for keeping their child(ren) home when they are sick. Although we have had a high percentage of students who have been absent due to illness (similar to rest of Canada), keeping your child home helps to decrease the chance of it spreading to other students and staff.

Our PAC Scholastic Bookfair was another great success with many books sold and other donated to the classrooms. Thank you to all those who supported with purchases and by volunteering their time!

With snow in the forecast, please take note of the following info:

  • Snow closures and power outages are an annual occurrence in Langley School District. So, where do you go to get information about the status of schools during periods of inclement weather? If you are able to access the internet via computer or smartphone, current information about Langley schools can be accessed on all school websites and the SD35 Website. Updates are also posted to Twitter @LangleySchools and on Facebook. If you don’t have internet connectivity but your phone is working, call a relative or friend in an area that has not been affected by the storm and ask them to check the district website for you. Local radio stations are also informed of school status in Langley. Tune in to CKWX 1130AM, CKNW 980AM, Country Radio 107.1FM, Pulse 107.7 or CBC 690AM or 88.1FM for updates.
Please note that Langley District schools are all considered ‘open’ until a decision to close is required. Decisions on school closures are usually made by 6:30am. As always, it is a parent’s decision whether to send their child to school based on safety and individual circumstances. If you feel it is unsafe for you or your child to travel to or attend an open school for any reason, please keep your child home and report an absence to the school.

As always, in Langley Schools, we are honoured to work, learn, and play on the unceded ancestral lands of the Matsqui, Kwantlen, Katzie, and Semiahmoo First Nations.

We hope you take a few minutes to read about a few of the good things happening at Shortreed along with some important info for the weeks ahead.

Good Things to Talk About

Student Inclusive Conferences – We have had an incredibly high participation rate (almost everyone has either attended a conference or signed up for one). Your efforts to attend the conference mean a lot to the students as they have been excited to showcase their learning from term 1. A huge thank you to our staff for all their efforts and time, including staying into the evening, to meet with all the students and families. Conferences continue this week.

Go Team Go! Our school was full of jerseys and support for our students and staff’s favourite teams as part of our Jersey Day on Friday. Thank you to everyone who was able to participate in our latest school spirit day!

Grade 5s Going Gaga! Our grade 5s have been participating in a Gaga Ball tourney. Students are on their selected teams with the chance to with the title and play the Shortreed Super Staff!

The Best Way to Spread Christmas Cheer… We love the sound of music in our school.. especially when it is our kids “singing loud for all to hear”. Mrs. Muller has been working so hard with the students to get them ready for our Christmas concerts coming up on Tuesday, December 13. A reminder to encourage extended families to come to the afternoon show (if they can) so we can spread out the crowd a little bit and there is room for everyone in the evening show.

It’s the Facts, Yo! Mrs. North’s students were participating in their daily math routine of practicing their math facts. Last week, they focused on practice and games involved adding 10.

Perfect 10s! Students in Division 18 have been learning about their 1-10 math facts. Last week, they worked with Ms. Cheema on writing, building, and making 1-10 in different ways.

Heating Up! Mr. D’s class has been exploring heat transfer in science. Last week, he showed the class a cool demo of how convection works using water and food colouring.

Kindness Rocks! Ms. Kaur’s class had a chance to show how much kindness rocks by giving the kindness rocks they created to some special friends, adults, and classmates in the school.

Signs of Fall – Miss Petersen’s class headed to the forest last week looking for signs of fall, the barest deciduous tree they could find and also had fun exploring the old tree trunk and roots.

Sense-ational Writing – Ms. Mostat’s class practiced their descriptive writing and connecting to the senses with a writing piece about Fall. Our school is moving to a writing goal for our school action plan so we will be having a lot of staff discussions around writing in 2023!
