Families of Shortreed,
In our morning announcements at school, we always acknowledge the lands upon which we work and learn. Because we have not been able to share this with our students, I want to say that we, in the Langley School District, are honoured to work, learn, and play on the unceded ancestral lands of the Matsqui, Kwantlen, Katzie, and Semiahmoo First Nations.
We hope you had a decent week last week. We certainly miss all the kids and families at the school. It has been nice to hear more and more stories of families doing better with remote learning; we also realize this is still a significant challenge for others. As was shared before, please do the best you can to support your family… however much of this is with remote learning, is up to you. We want to meet you where you are and support you from there.
I hope you have had a great Mother’s Day (in whatever role you play or whomever you celebrate this with). All caregivers have been working extra hard (with SO much needed patience) over the past 6-7 weeks so we hope you all take a moment to show appreciation to yourself and others who are providing support.
Good Things to Talk About
The Fourth Was With You – We had a great Shortreed School Spirit Day last Monday as many students, staff, and families celebrated Star Wars Day! Thank you to all those who posted photos and had some fun on that day.
Spreading Love – A Shortreed family came and shared some gratitude with a number of staff members while also taking some time to decorate our front doors with hearts last week. We truly appreciate the gesture and also know how incredibly hard families are working – please know how grateful we are to all of you too!
Lunch, Anyone? Our Grab n’ Go lunch program has been a success as they serve about 40 lunches per day. It is now expanding to provide lunches for any families in Aldergrove who need a boost! If you are in need of lunch (or want the odd break for a lunch), please pop by the outside of the Music/Multipurpose room between 11:30 and 12:30 any school day to receive lunch for kids (and adults). Thank you so much to our support staff for leading this and to all those who are helping to make this happen.
Thank You, Mr. Rasmussen and Ms. McCabe! It is the final week of their practicums for Mr. R, who has been working with Mrs. Parsons and Div 1, and Ms. McCabe, who has been working with Mrs. Datema and Div 12. This has been a very different practicum for these new teachers but they have shown incredible growth, patience, determination, and resilience through this challenging teaching experience and we are so grateful for their efforts through the past few months. We will miss them and we know they will be hired by whichever districts they apply to so we hope to see them back in SD35 and Shortreed next year!
The Week Ahead
Neufeld Farms orders must be picked up on Tuesday, May 12 at 2:15 in the Shortreed parking lot. Physical distancing protocols are in effect.
Friday, May 15 is a Pro-D Day. Although the learning curve has been huge for all staff since Spring Break, Shortreed Staff will be working with Carman McKay (one of the district’s cultural presenters from the Aboriginal Program) for this Pro-D. Lessons will not be planned for students for Friday.
A reminder that Monday, May 18 is a holiday (Victoria Day) so there will not be any remote learning scheduled for that day as well.
Please click here for an important update letter from our superintendent, Gord Stewart. The letter includes some info on phasing students back into the school. More details will come in the next week or two on this.
Have a good week!
