Good Things and the Week Ahead – June 3-7, 2024

Posted: June 2, 2024

Families of Shortreed,

We hope you had a great weekend and either jumped in those puddles or found some fun indoor activities! June marks the start of National Indigenous History Month and Pride Month. As we have done throughout the year at Shortreed, we will continue to learn about and honour the wonderful diversity within our community!

As was emailed earlier, this week is Bike/Roll to School Week! We encourage our students and families to wear helmets and hop on and ride their bikes, scooters, or skateboards to school! Each time your child rolls to school, they will be entered for a prize from Cranky’s!

The calendar for the June Feeding Futures (Lunch Lady) program was sent out today, A reminder that orders for Friday need to be in by Tuesday night. Friday is our 2024 edition of Shortreed’s Got Talent! Our students have been practicing hard and are looking forward to putting on another great show. Thank you to Mrs. Parsons and Ms. Coghill for leading the event this year.

With Sports Day on June 14 approaching, students should be told their Sports Day colours this week. A schedule and more information will also be emailed out this week. We would love to see you all there cheering us on. The day starts with a Bike Parade (and scooters), and then we move into the events from 9 to 12.

Please add Diversity Day to your calendars! On Tuesday, June 11, we encourage our students to wear something to school that shares a little bit about who they are and why they are Proud to be Me! Last year, we had students in traditional and cultural regalia, athletic uniforms/jerseys, rainbow colours, dance and cheer attire, or clothing with their favourite superhero or character on them, The options are endless so please encourage your child to wear something that shares a bit about who they are and why they the can say “I’m Proud to be ME!“.

As always, we want to acknowledge that we do our important work to ensure every child belongs on the unceded ancestral territories of the Màthxwi (Matsqui) First Nation. We acknowledge this to honour the land and the people and share our commitment to learning in our journey for Truth and Reconciliation. This month is National Indigenous History Month and our focus is on four words: Accomplishments, Inspiration, Resilience, Success. We will learn and teach examples of Indigenous Peoples that represent these 4 words (thank you to Ms. Elson for walking alongside us). The staff has also committed to choosing aspects of a learning calendar created by Jessica Bedard and Mrs. Parsons. The calendar consists of activities you can choose to do to learn more about the history of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. We encourage you also to choose aspects of the calendar for your learning. To download the calendar, click here. The link also includes learning opportunities for students, which we will use. Thank you to Jessica and Mrs. Parsons for their permission to share!

We hope you take a few minutes to read up on a few of the school-wide activities that have taken place and some reminders for the weeks ahead. A reminder to follow us on social media for more good things from the classrooms.

Good Things to Talk About

Fly So High! Our Eagles definitely soared high on Tuesday at the Regional Track Meet at McLeod Stadium. Our sprinters, throwers, jumpers, and middle-distance runners all put in a top-notch effort (even in a downpour!), and many came home with some top ribbons from the event. It seemed like Shortreed was at or near the top each time there was a finish. Congratulations to all the athletes. Thank you to Jessica Wright, who helped prepare our students for this year’s running events.

Here Comes the Sun! In a week filled with rain… the sun managed to come out for a day on Friday… and this happened to be our Tropical Day Spirit Day! We loved seeing all the outfits and props that helped bring our school even more sunshine and warmth that day.

Splish, Splash! Our grade 2 students all travelled to Walnut Grove on Friday for some fun at the awesome splash park there. Students had a blast embracing the sunshine, splashing in the waterpark, playing in the creek, and playing at the playground. I’m sure they slept well on Friday night!

Starting with Strengths! This past week, we had our third edition of our Term 3 Club Wednesdays. What we love about Club Wednesdays is that both students and staff get to either start with their strengths or possibly find new ones! With kids being able to explore arts, athletics, and many other skills, they can find strengths or interests they never knew they had!

Former Eagles and Future Raptors – Four WEB Leaders and former Shortreed students from BGMS joined Mrs. Burns and Mrs. Guthrie to teach our grade 5s all about life as a Raptor. They shared highlights, answered many questions about the school, and played some fun games. Our 5s are looking forward to heading over to BGMS this Thursday!

Information and Reminders

  • We are noticing that more students are being dropped off before we have supervision in the morning. Supervision does not start until 8:30 so we do not have adults to watch or support our students. Please do your best to wait to drop your children off until 8:30 each day.
  • Summer Session 2024 – Elementary/Middle/Secondary

Are you looking for skill-building or new learning opportunities for your child to keep them engaged during the summer? The District offers a variety of courses as part of Summer Session. Online registration begins on April 17 (Elementary/Middle) and April 18 (Secondary) at 10:00am for Langley School District students only. To register, you will need a student PEN (Personal Education Number). You can find your student’s PEN in MyEDBC. If you are having trouble accessing your PEN, you can visit our MyEDBC Portal Help Page or contact your school. For dates, times, and courses available to grade 1-12 students, please visit our webpage here.

  • Our breakfast program is up and running! Please register at this link.

  • Attendance/Absence – If your child is going to be absent, arriving late, away or leaving early due to an appointment, please notify the school of your child’s absence by emailing SCEAttendance@sd35.bc.ca or calling 604-856-4167.

  • Our school parking lot is closed between 8:15-9:00 and 2:00-2:45 (other than daycare, buses, and vehicles for people with a disability). The church across the street graciously allows us to use their parking lot for pick-up and drop-off so please park there or along 28th Ave. Do not park in the “no parking” (coned) areas along the yellow curbs. No u-turns.
  • West Coast Recess – As we have done over the past few years, every day is an outside day at Shortreed. Unless there is a severe rainstorm (or snowstorm), we will be heading outside. Please make sure your child has a coat to wear outside. We have a good selection of coats in our FREE Coat Exchange near the office, so come by and check them out.
